How To Prepare Your Kitchen For Painting?
Looking to paint your kitchen? It’ll take some time to get done! You’ll also need to create a separate area where you cook temporarily.
Read ahead to get a detailed guide on everything you need to do before painting your kitchen.
Get Rid Of Kitchen Appliances
You don’t want anything that will get in the way of your paint project, and certainly not big appliances like refrigerators. You must expose the spaces underneath and around your kitchen walls for a perfect paint job.
Stoves, microwaves, fridges; everything needs to go. You don’t necessarily need them out of the kitchen; just drag them to the middle of the room. Get extra hands to help you with this, as some items can be very heavy. Remember to cover them with a plastic sheet to prevent any paint from falling on them.
Get Rid Of Hardware
Once you’ve created a separate and temporary space for all your cooking needs, you’ll want to remove any hardware or tools from your kitchen walls and transfer them to the new cooking area.
So, if you have any curtains, shelves, clocks, wallpapers, photo frames, nails, cables, or other objects on your walls, they need to go!
Painters will find it challenging to work around objects, so get them out of the way. If you don’t do this, you’ll end up with small pockets of old paint.
Click a picture of your wall before removing any items. It’ll make it easier to put them back in their original sections.
Cover The Floor
Things are bound to get messy, with drops of paint splattering all over the floor. That’s why you must cover it with some protective layer.
The best way to do this is by shielding your floors with drop cloths to prevent contact with paint splatters. Use tape to seal the floor along with window and door frames. Pay attention to any mouldings and seal them with tape as well.
Clean Everything
You can’t paint over a dirty wall; unless you want the brand-new coat to mix with all kinds of dirt. So go ahead and give your kitchen walls a thorough washing!
Oil or grease on the kitchen walls will ruin the paint and prevent the primer from covering anything. Moreover, greasy spots will be quite prominent; you don’t want that.
- Take a piece of cloth and spray some degreaser on it.
- Wipe the wall surface and the floors to remove any oil.
- Wipe any drawers or cabinet doors.
- Use a mop to clean the floor after you’ve wiped the walls from any dirt.
Check Everything Before Painting
You can’t just start painting if there are any remaining imperfections on the wall. Look for any bumps, holes, moulds, or sensitive spots that need fixing.
Remember, primer only works on dry and clean surfaces, so ensure you’re thorough. You might need some help with this, as you’ll have to fill any cracks or holes in your walls and ceilings. You’ll also have to smoothen any scratched surfaces by sanding them. Lastly, dry the walls and smoothen them up for the final paint.
Give a final check and watch out for any remaining imperfections. All clear? That’s great! You can start your exciting paint project without any delay!
